They almost have to do this to compete don't they. Google Korea is different too.
You would think simple UI would translate internationally but it could be a different navigation style?
In Asia, the majority of people prefer content over simple UI. Search is secondary, at least from what I've learned in Hong Kong and Korea. In China, you'll notice sites that are loaded with text and links like one of the local portal Sina, www.sina.com.cn.
