I don’t think the article is as laughable as Ken Worsley makes it out to be. By his logic, no company subject to market forces would ever be freely taking any action, because every corporate action is compelled by the marketplace. Unless he can offer me a coherent way to differentiate voluntary from coerced actions in a capitalist system, his argument is pretty weak.
Frankly I was surprised to see so many foreigners in Tokyo. Places like Roppongi Hills are almost as metropolitan as NYC. But still it’s difficult to imagine Japan becoming a melting pot, and Japan as a country is still highly homogeneous.
When I read that the other day I cringed. I think it is easy to find examples that go against common perception. But to then try to establish some kind of trend can be very dubious. That is certainly the case here.
Tanikawa is a fixture at the FCCJ. I think these are the kinds of articles that foreign editors like to get.
