Apple's new Intel-powered MacBook has been released. Including a nice black model!
It's hard to see what the MacBook Pro gets you besides extra screen space.
Anyone out there considering this cool new machine?

The MacBook seems close to power against the MacBook Pro (even tho they got speedbumped). Besides a crap graphics board and a shiny screen (hate them!), they're pretty good for the price!
so yah, like eddie said, the big downgrade from the pro to the regular macbook is the graphics card. but the regular macbook can finally do dual-screen instead of just video mirroring so it might not matter. i'm off to the apple store to check 'em out and see how bad the shiny screen is. i'm worried about that as i like to use my computer outside alot. i'll report back later.
Looks like Koh is going for it!

I've actually been waiting for this announcement. The Black one seems overpriced... what does it get you thats worth the $150 more than a white one with an 80GB?
As the owner of a year-old iBook, I am all about the portability. These machines are seriously lustworthy, but I think my personal upgrade schedule puts me on track for a new laptop in 2008.
But the MacBooks look great. I think you'd really have to want the big screen to buy the Pro model. And the price is not bad (but no DVD burner on the bottom model; that's one way to up-sell...).
I will probably recommend these as the standard Mac laptop for new purchasers at my office.
so i went and looked at them. here's the skinny. the "glossy" screen is not *that* shiny. not nearly as crazy shiny as, say, a vaio or a moto RAZR.
the new keyboard is totally awesome. i love it, i adapted to it instantly. it seems much more crud-proof too, which is a bonus.
if you are going to play games on this, forget it, the intel 950 grfx chips just don't have the horsepower. likewise, aperture, final cut and other "pro" applications that require advanced graphics cards and high resolution cannot run on the macbook either.
i currently have the last of the 15" powerbooks. the one with the high res screen, and honestly the only thing i'm trying to figure out is whether i can sacrifice the extra pixels. my power book screen is 160 pixels bigger in each direct. that's alot of space. other than that, i can give up the lighted keyboard and light sensor.
i'm not a gamer and i don't use the pro level apps, just ilife, so i don't need the extra grfx strength that the macbook pro gives.
I was all set on buying a MBPro but now I'm seriously considering one of these. Like yourself, I see little difference apart from price between the mid-range macbook and the bottom-end pro.
If all I'm paying for with the pro is an expansion slot I won't use, extra graphics oomph that I don't need (not much of a gamer) and *less* battery life then consider me sold on the macbook.
I'm going to hunt one down within the next few days and try out that keyboard - looks like one of those love/hate things.
Well, my 12" Powerbook is going on 4 years old, so it is time for the MacBook–non-glossy, white. It still isn't what I really want, though. Why can't Apple come out with a B5 format lightweight like the Let's Note. I'd gladly give up a superdrive etc. for a 1 kg Mac.
I'm definitely going down to the Apple Store in SoHo this weekend to buy one!
The black one looks hot! I'd love one, no doubt.
I was hoping for something thinner and lighter than my dear 12" PowerBook. It would finally have a back-lit keyboard and at least incrementally improved video graphics.
However, I was just notified by mail that the custom Black model I ordered a couple of days ago... just shipped! So there you go.
Did you say Cool? I think you meant Cook. I have a MacCookPro which runs around 67+ Degrees. I wonder if the new MacCook's will be cooler.
They do keep Coffee warm throughout the day though! : )
Just got a black one yesterday and love it. I needed to replace my 4 year old, ailing Sony VAIO PCG-R505JSK laptop. It feels good to be back on a Mac!
