This is a known problem with the AOL Servers. Also the Tier 3 Backbone problem in the US is not helping either.
One day AOL will update their servers properly...
The rare times I've even started up ichat lately have been fun and games with this error.
I get this problem too, what is stranger is how I get this error.
In the office where I am behind a the company firewall (which I manage) I can connect without fail, at home though I don't think I have connected to aim for almost 3 months. This happens in both iChat and Adium, and at both locations I use plala (ISP).
Hmm. I never had any problem with this at one location with Plala, then I just moved to a new apartment and now suddenly AIM doesn't work at all. Not only that, but skype and MS messenger don't work either.
It seems to me that the issue is with Plala, not AOL, and that Plala is blocking some TCP connections by default as a way to "protect" its customers.
Try and change youre fiirewall/port settings
