An interesting tidbit I gleaned from the article – FLAG is now owned by Reliance, a big Indian zaibatsu-wannabe that used to specialize in oil refineries.
It looks like they want to control the pipe used to offshore white collar jobs from the US and Europe. Can you say “giant sucking sound”? Not that I begrudge them, after all, they have been on the receiving end of globalization more often than not, it’s time they returned the compliment.
One of my former colleagues at France Telecom was in charge of FT’s cable laying operations on one of their affiliate FCR’s 3 specialized ships, and worked on SEA-ME-WE-3, about 10 years ago.
There is still a lot of capacity left in the existing cables using technologies like DWDM, that were not ready for prime time 10 years ago (at least not for undersea links). Building a new cable can only be justified by a massive bandwidth surge – think going from 56K to DSL.
It makes sense that Reliance goes from oil to telecom. They seem to be very similar industries in fact.
