I’ve been joking and calling it the Game Boy Advance model, but I’d be happy to hear other impressions. The one thing that is nice about this one is that it is really small in comparison to the larger NX series PDAs Sony has been selling in the past. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Memory Stick support built in. Plus a camera too.

I like it! I’m a long time palm user myself, and I’m currently using the Tungsten T…
I think this one might target a slightly different market, but with Palm OS and WiFi — a nice little tidbit
I see what you meant by “Game Boy Advanced”
I like it though. Size is great, we’ll have to see about the KB. One problem though. No CF support.
If they put out a small CF or PCMCIA sled for this it will be a mobloggers dream machine. Well, except for the 70,000 price tag that is.
Yeah the no CF slot is a bummer. But it is fundamentally a different kind of machine than the NX series Clie. So I think they wanted to keep it small and thus no CF.
Well, I stopped by the Sony plaza in Ginza today. They had a couple UX-50′s there and I got to play with one for a few minutes.
On the whole it was pretty neat. Again, the size and form factor is great. Also the new layout gives this the best keyboard layout yet on a Sony PDA.
Accepting that this model will not have any cell modem support, the only other complaint I have now is that the screen is REEEALY small. I know this, this is going to be one of the smallest pda’s on the market, but the screen looked so small, especially with the extra wide bezel edge.
concidering we are looking at a device in the same price range as the NX-80, I think I’d really like a bit more. This strikes me as more of an upgrade to the TG-50. Albiet with an awsome kb.
I am thinking of picking up a Clie soon, but am torn between the UG-50 and the NX80 now.
Sony CLIE PEG-UX50 nifty tech, odd form
Wi-Fi Networking News are right, the new Sony CLIE PEG-UX50 has wireless a-plenty, runs Palm OS, but has odd form factor… The PEG-UX50 is a “landscape clamshell”, with a 480 x 320 pixel screen that runs width-wise rather than vertically,…
I’m buying one in spite of the 7-man yen price tag. I has all the features I’ve been looking for in one compact unit–bluetooth, MP3, MPEG movie playback, built-in camera that can take pictures AND video, voice recorder, and most of all, a Palm OS. True, it doesn’t have a CF slot, but given that even the Clies that DO (have a CF slot) don’t really support CF devices (they only offer memory expansion on the newer models), I don’t see the big deal about not having one, if it means that it’ll be the size of my GBASP. Besides, it offers compatibility with MS PRO, which now has cards up to 1GB, anyway. And as for the screen being too small, I must say that the specs say that it is a 480×320 screen (the largest on a Palm device), which puts it at the same size as the NX80, except that it has a landscape layout, instead of portrait. I think it just seems smaller because of the overall smaller size of the unit.
So, with all of that said, this is a fabulous device that only suffers from a hefty price tag. Hopefully when I buy mine, it’ll have dropped a bit in price…or maybe I’ll just fork over the cash and buy it now!
IMHO, the built-in Bluetooth somewhat compensates for the absence of a CF slot, and helps keep the PDA’s size extremely compact.
The UX50 can probably use a Bluetooth-enabled cell phone in your pocket as a wireless access device, in places where no 802.11 signal is available. Most people I know who have PDAs also have cell phones anyway…
Good news and bad for Maxmasa31
The bad news is you’re a little off on your screen size estimate. While the UX-50 and the NX-80 do have the same screen resolution, the screen sizes are quite different. (funny how Sony is one of the only PDA makers that don’t include display size as part of the unit specs. The NX-80 has one of the largest displays on any palmOS PDA (3.8inch) UX-50 falls closer 3.2. Basically it’s a smaller screen with pizels closer together. The Zaurus C700′s for example managed to cram a 640×480 screen in a 3.5 in screen.
But if you’re still determined to buy, there is good news. If you do a bit of searching around, I have seen advanced orders going in for the UX-50 at around 65,000 yen. If you are willing to wait a few weeks after release you should be able to shave some buck of the hefty price. Also I have heard talk of a UX-40 unit soon following that is the same thing – the 802.11b capability at 10,000 less.
